How do I keep my Jeep Warm this Winter?
Well, it’s that time of the year already. It’s not snowing yet, but for how cold it is, it might as well be. The Jeep lineup boasts so many great features to be used all throughout the year, but it shines when it comes to cold weather. Let’s explore the options included in the Cold Weather Package.
Do I really need to upgrade my Jeep to get the heated seats? Yes, yes you do. Picture yourself outside getting in your Jeep Compass for work at 6 am. You take your snow brush dust off the car, as usual snow gets on you and all you want to do is go inside and get under the covers. But…you can’t! So this is where your cold weather package comes in! Get into your Jim Shorkey Jeep turn on the heated seats and relax. The seats feature a high and low setting and can be simply activated by a button on your dashboard.
Next up is the heated mirrors. This will also come in handy on those cold icy days. These can be activated from inside the car to get rid of those hazardous ice chunks on your mirror. You can even use them on rainy days to help with the fog.
Another available option is an engine block heater. This actually allows the driver to plug the engine into an electrical outlet to make it easier to start on those frigid days.
Not all of these options might be available with every package or Jeep. Just inquire when you are in for your test drive at Jim Shorkey Jeep in North Huntingdon, PA.
Tips For Getting Your Vehicle Winter Ready
October is Car Care Month, and that means it’s time to think about getting your vehicle ready for the Winter months. You know the struggles – avoiding black ice, clearing the snow off your vehicle, and waiting for your vehicle to warm up. Follow these maintenance tips so you have one less thing to worry about when driving on those snow-covered roads.
Check/Change your wipers
Most wiper blades are only good for six months to a year, so if your windshield is getting streaky when it rains, now is the time to replace them. There are already plenty of risks during the winter months, and adding reduced visibility will only make it worse. While you’re checking the wear of your current wipers, it’s a good idea to top off your wiper fluid to keep your windshield clear of salt and precipitation.
Check your battery
During the cold weather, your battery slows down, causing your engine to require more current from your battery to the starter. To avoid battery related car troubles this winter, check your battery terminals and wires for rust, cracks, and proper connections and have your battery tested to make sure it’s properly charged and has enough power to handle the winter.
Tire Pressure
The cold weather can cause your tires to drop in pressure about 1 PSI for every 10 degrees Fahrenheit that the temperature drops. When your tires have low air, it can affect the way our vehicle handles, increases the chances of a blown tire and decrease your fuel efficiency. So make sure they’re properly inflated! You can check what the proper PSI for your vehicle’s tires by looking at the sticker on the inside of the driver door.
Tire tread & type
Winter roads can be tricky between the snow, ice, and cold weather. This means that not only are your tires taking a beating, but they’re also playing an extra important role in keeping you safe. Tire tread is what allows you to grip and not slide. Not only do you want to check the tread depth, but you also want to consider the type of tire you are using. Consider snow tires for passenger vehicles or all-terrain tires for trucks during winter.
Have an emergency kit in your car
Dealing with a flat tire, fender bender, or your car breaking down is stressful enough without adding the cold weather to the mix. Keep these items in your car to make these situations less stressful in case they do occur: jumper cables, water, warm blanket, first-aid kit, jack & tire iron, road flares or reflective triangle, flashlight, extra food, and some kitty litter or sand for traction in case you get stuck somewhere.
Wintertime can be a beautiful and magical time of the year. Freshly fallen snow, warm nights by the fire, building a snowman, hot cocoa, and the holidays all make it a time to look forward to! Keeping up on the maintenance of your vehicle and preparing for the season ahead will ensure that you focus on those wonderful things without having unnecessary vehicle stresses. Stop into your local Jim Shorkey Dealership to schedule a time for those checkups!
Tire Alignment
It’s that time of year! We’re transitioning from Summer weather into Fall and Winter. And that means wet and slick roads. To handle these conditions, you’ll want to make sure you have good tires. And one way to do that is an alignment. Many of us don’t realize the importance of proper wheel alignment on our cars. We tend to think that nothing much happens to our tires other than the occasional puncture. That couldn’t be further from the truth. It is very important that we regularly get our wheels aligned, and some say it should be done as often as we get the car serviced.
Wheel alignment is making sure that the wheels of the car are perpendicular to the road; also, it makes sure that the wheels are parallel to one other.
You can save fuel: Proper inflation for a given tire size and truckload will reduce the flexing, stress, and build-up in the tire that lead to wasteful fuel use. The casing of the tire is important as well. Even retreaded casings that retain fuel efficiency can be effective.
You will be saving money: The cost of an alignment is nothing compared to the cost of new tires. Uneven pressure on the road means more pressure on your tires. That leads to very quick wear and tear. It results in the tire becoming bald on one side. This means that the tires are uneven. Not only is it dangerous to drive on uneven tires, but it also means that you have to spend on new tires sooner.
You’re being safe: Have you ever driven a car which pulls itself to one side all the time? This is due to faulty wheel alignment. I’m sure you know how difficult it is to drive on wet or iced roads even with aligned wheels. With badly aligned wheels, you are taking unnecessary risks.
If you find that when your steering wheel is pointing straight and the vehicle veers to the right or left, that indicates that you need an alignment. Another indicator is when you find one tire is worn more than another.
The rule is that you should get your wheels aligned once every 6000 miles or every 6 months, whichever is earlier. You should get your wheels aligned or checked by a service professional if you hit something large enough to cause issues.
